Francisco Bethencourt is Charles Boxer Professor of History at King’s College London. He is a leading historian of the Portuguese-speaking world, with a special interest in the history of racism, inequality, gendering, cosmopolitanism, utopia, minorities, merchant cultures, cultural exchange, or intellectual sociability. His latest book is Strangers Within: The Rise and Fall of the New Christian Trading Elite (2024). He is currently the PI of the ERC Advanced Grants project ‘New Christian Materiality, 1450-1750’.
