CANCELLED - Maravall’s La cultura del Barroco

iglesia de san francisco quito ecuador 2015 07 22 dd 162 164 hdr

The concept of the baroque, however elusive and controversial, has been crucial to scholarly understandings of the early modern Iberian world. This year’s meetings of the Iberian History Reading Group consist of an exercise in slow reading. We critically engage with the classic book by José Antonio Maravall’s La cultura del Barroco: Análisis de una estructura histórica (1975) and use its deep if problematic influence to explore the ways in which historians can rethink the relationship between power, culture, and society across the seventeenth-century Iberian Atlantic. Each meeting is dedicated to discussing one or more sections of Maravall’s work and/or other relevant readings.
